Only six French men have won the ATP World Tour tournament in Marseille since its inception in 1993, and only two of those six have won the Open 13 Provence title twice – Gilles Simon in 2007 (d. Marcos Baghdatis) and 2015 (d. Gael Monfils), and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2009 (d. Michael Llodra) and 2013 (d. Tomas Berdych). The history of accomplishment in Marseille on both sides of the net promises to add an intriguing extra dimension to what is already a classic contrast of styles as the dogged, underpowered retrieving of Simon tries to absorb the explosive shot-making of Tsonga.
Seventh-seeded Simon, whose Open 13 Provence title defense was ended in the first round last year when he was shocked by Teymuraz Gabashvili, led the way into the quarterfinals. Without the benefit of a first-round bye, Simon had to come back from a set down against rising star Karen Khachanov in the first round on Monday, before outlasting fellow French player Julien Benneteau 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 on Wednesday – all before Tsonga had even played his first match in Marseille.
A top-10 player all the way back in 2009 when he was ranked as high as world no. 6, Simon comes into the Open 13 Provence ranked world no. 23 after a largely uninspired 33-26 season in 2016, highlighted by a Masters 1000 Series semifinal appearance at the Shanghai Masters towards the end of the year (he also made the semifinals at the Moselle Open in Metz, and was a quarterfinalist at the Miami Masters).
