On Friday night in the Maracana Stadium, Rio de Janeiro, Olympic women’s football will crown only its third gold medal-winning team, which in seven tournaments is quite incredible.
Two traditional powers have claimed spots in Rio 2016’s women’s soccer final, though the way Germany and Sweden reached Friday’s goal medal match creates a David versus Goliath feel.
Goliath would be the Germans, who avenged their tournament’s only loss with a convincing 2-0 victory on Tuesday over previously unbeaten Canada. Out-executing and, ultimately, out-lasting London 2012’s bronze medalists, Germany retained the mantle many awarded it when the United States bowed out. The No. 2 team in the world is the team to beat Friday at the Maracana.
Sweden pulled off arguably the biggest upset in women’s soccer history when they beat the United States in penalty kicks in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Summer Olympics Games, setting themselves up for an Olympic medal for the first time in team history. Sweden took on the home team Brazil in the semifinals to move on to the gold medal match, beating Brazil in the same fashion that they beat USA: penalty kicks.
Germany won the bronze medal in 2000, 2004, and 2008, now for the first time in team history they will finish in either first or second. After a placing second behind Canada in group F, as well as losing the first match against then, Germany rallied to overcome Canada in the semifinals. Germany beat Canada with a final score of 2-0 in regulation time of the semifinals. After failing to qualify for the Olympics in 2012, Germany is on a mission to prove that they are fully back to their old selves, if not better.
