Is it possible for a Week 2 game to be a “must-win” type of contest? The fantastic aspect about the game of football resides in the fact that every game means so much, week in and week out. While the San Diego Chargers aren’t in the AFC North, it’s a conference game with many implications for both clubs in 2015.
For all of the bloody-knuckled history between the Bengals and their divisional foes, the Chargers have a special place in Cincinnati’s historical annals. Whether it was “The Freezer Bowl” in January of 1982, the Chris Henry memorial in Southern California back in 2009, or the Wild Card disaster in during the 2013 playoff bracket, the two teams have had some epic battles.
The team that had arguably the best offensive performance from Week 1 will go up against the club that put forth one of the best defensive performances Sunday when the Chargers visit Cincinnati to take on the Bengals.
San Diego torched Detroit last week even without tight end Antonio Gates, who is serving a four-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. Philip Rivers, fresh off a four-year, $84 million contract extension, threw for 404 yards and two touchdowns. He rallied the Chargers back from a 21-3 second-quarter deficit, with San Diego scoring 30 straight points to take the lead. Keenan Allen led all receivers with 15 catches and 166 yards.
Allen is a tough cover for any secondary, but if any team can handle him, it’s Cincinnati. Leon Hall, Adam Jones and Darqueze Dennard are all capable corners, and they’re backed up by two of the best safeties in the game, Reggie Nelson and George Iloka. The Bengals are physical up front as well, with Michael Johnson and Geno Atkins making life miserable for opposing quarterbacks. Linebacker Vontaze Burfict is healthy this season, too.
After an impressive showing against a stout Detroit Lions team, the San Diego Chargers pack their bags and head to Ohio for their first road game of the season against the Cincinnati Bengals. This could prove to be an even bigger test for Philip Rivers and the rest of the San Diego Chargers as the Bengals are coming of a resounding victory over the Oakland Raiders. It’s also an early game for the Chargers, on the road, and it’s the Bengals’ home opener.
All indications are it’ll be a tough game, but San Diego just might have enough weapons to come back home with a victory.
